Interesting landmarks: Fort Montego - which dates back to the days when all coastal towns had to be defended. The fort was hardly ever used. A battery with three cannons and the powder magazine are all that remain. The Dome - Built in 1837 over the creek, which used to supply Montego Bay with water. The keeper of the creek had its office there. The Cage - built in 1806 as an over night jail for runaway slaves disorderly seaman and vagrants. The Parish church of St. James - dedicated to St. James the Great, built in 1778, the church was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1957 but has been beautifully restored. Burchell Memorial church - established in 1824 by Rev. Thomas Burchell, a Baptist missionary and abolitionist. The early congregation was mostly slaves. Samuel Sharpe the great slave leader was a deacon there. Visit Rose Hall Great House or take a rafting trip down the Great River or Martha Brae.
