Dominican Republic - Puerto Plata
San Felipe de Puerto Plata, as
the city was baptized by Nicolas de Ovando in 1502, was founded by order of the
Spanish Crown to protect the northern coast of the colony of La Española or La Hispaniola.
It is said that the shimmering sunlight on the bay’s waters gave the city its name
of the Silver Coast.
Today
Puerto Plata, as it is more commonly known, is home to a bustling tourist industry.
The city manages to retain its Caribbean flavor with one of the world’s largest
collection of Victorian Gingerbread architecture, the Fortaleza San Felipe, which
still guards the entrance to the city’s port, the Brugal Rum Distillery, and the
world’s largest collection of fossil-bearing amber at the Amber Museum.
Village of San Rio
The small village
of Rio San Juan lies just five minutes from the Caribbean Village Playa Grande and
about an hour from Puerto Plata. From here guests can take a beautiful boat
ride across the Gri-Gri Lagoon and observe the flora and fauna of the mangrove swamps
and see egrets nesting. Next it's on to the Atlantic Ocean for a ride along the
coast. Guests can greet local fishermen as they make their way to the cave of the
swallows.
Brief History of the Dominican Republic
Before it's discovery, the island of Quisqueya was populated by the Taíno Indians, divided into five 'chieftainships' or governments run by a great chief or Cacique.
